Terms and conditions
The short version: the tools are free, they run on your device, and your results are yours. This page spells that out properly.
Using NameKnot
NameKnot is a free collection of name tools. There is no account to create and nothing to sign for — by using the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, simply do not use the site; nothing you entered is retained on our side, because nothing you entered reaches us.
The tools are provided as they are. We keep them working and we label their output honestly, but we do not promise uninterrupted availability or that every result will be error-free.
Your inputs and your results
Whatever you type into a tool stays in your browser — see the privacy policy for the exact mechanics. The names you combine, the blends you generate, and the lists you save are yours: use them for a baby, a character, a business, a story, a game — there is no attribution required and no fee.
Fair use
Personal use is unlimited. What you may not do is disrupt the site (attempting to overload, scrape at volume, or bypass its protections), present the site or its pages as your own, or use the tools for anything unlawful. Facts — names, and the meanings and origins of names — are not ours to own; the site's own writing and design are.
Data sources and attribution
Popularity and gender data come from the United States Social Security Administration and are public domain. Meanings and origins are adapted from English Wiktionary and carry its CC BY-SA 4.0 licence — if you republish those texts elsewhere, keep that attribution. Where a source records nothing for a field, the tools say “Not recorded” rather than inventing a value.
Advertising and outbound links
The site is funded by advertising, not subscriptions. When advertising is activated, it is governed by the ad network's own terms and by our privacy policy, which names exactly what is set. Links to outside sources (the SSA, Wiktionary, and similar) are provided for your convenience; those sites run under their own terms, not ours.
Not professional advice
The tools offer ideas and information — naming is not legal, financial, medical or trademark advice, and a match in these tools says nothing about whether a name is legally available, trademarked, or free of meaning somewhere else in the world. Check the things that matter with the people who decide them.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change materially, the updated page will be dated below. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the new terms. Last reviewed: 2026-10-07.
Questions about these terms go through the contact page. See also the about page for how the tools are made.
