About NameKnot

NameKnot is a small collection of name tools that run entirely in your browser. No account, no paywall, no upload — supported by advertising, not by your data.

How the tools work

Every tool does its work on your device. When you generate names, the code runs in your page: there is no request to a server, no queue, and no waiting. It is why the results appear instantly, why the tools work offline once the page has loaded, and why the promise on every page — nothing you type ever leaves your browser — is literal, not marketing.

The name combiner takes between two and twelve names, blends them at every plausible seam, and scores each result. The scoring is not a black box: each name comes with a plain-language reason — which letters came from where, how it sounds, how many syllables it has. The baby name generator takes the same starting idea and searches a bundled library of real names instead, returning only names that your two inputs can explain, with meaning, origin, gender, and popularity beside each match.

Where the data comes from

Popularity and gender come from the United States Social Security Administration, which has published baby-name records for over a century; we bundle the most recent top names from that public-domain dataset. Meanings and origins are adapted from English Wiktionary and carry its CC BY-SA 4.0 licence, with full attribution on the tool page itself. When a source has no record for a field, the tool says “Not recorded” rather than inventing one.

The same rule governs every number you read on this site: it names its source, and it is shown exactly. If a count is “24 of 126”, it is 24 — we do not round a small number up to look bigger.

Tools available today

NameKnot currently offers 2 tools: the Name Combiner and the Baby Name Generator. Each has a distinct job, and both run in your browser.

Principles

  • Free means free. No subscription, no account, no “sign up to see results”, no watermarks on your output.
  • Your input is yours. Generation is local; see the privacy policy for the exact mechanics.
  • Honest labels. A database match is labelled as a match; an invented blend is labelled as a blend. The two are never mixed to make a list look longer.
  • Distinct tools. Each tool produces a genuinely different output — not the same list with a different heading. If two ideas would produce the same artifact, they ship as one tool with a mode, not two competing pages.
  • Advertising keeps it free, and advertising never sits on top of the tool you came to use.
